The government’s unprecedented move to rejuvenate India’s fundamental education infrastructure is assuredly farsighted and admirable. Since independence, the Government of India has adopted significant steps to impart affordable and hassle-free education to every child of the country without any discrimination. After seven decades of independence, India has developed a large network of schools, according to the estimation today India has 10,83,678 public schools and over 400,000 unaided private schools in the country.        

According to Statista.com (German company specializing in market and consumer data) in 2018, 131 million students enrolled in government schools in India while 119 million students enrolled in private schools. Significantly, the Indian schooling system is one of the largest in the world and caters to over 250 million students.  Now, let’s see other aspects of the Indian education system, 32 million underprivileged children have never been to any school and according to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and Global Education Monitoring 47 million young men and women dropped out of school by the 10th standard.    

According to the report by the New Delhi-based Institute for Policy Research Studies (PRS), enrollment in class 10 is 77 percent, but enrollment in class 11 is only 52 percent. Here, student’s school dropout is a major concern. According to the report released by the Government, the dropout rate at the secondary school level in the country is more than 17%, while the dropout rate at upper-primary (VI to VIII) and primary level is 1.8% and 1.5%.    

There are several reasons behind student’s school dropout like expensive tuition fees, picking the wrong course, discouraging environment and not being prepared academically. Open school board education system is designed to overcome all of these hurdles that inhibit the universalization of education.
